Understanding Fence Types
Different fence types serve various purposes from privacy to decoration, each with unique installation requirements.
-
Wood Fence
Classic choice with natural appeal. Available in pressure-treated pine, cedar, redwood, or cypress. Heights typically range from 4-8 feet. Requires regular maintenance including staining or sealing every 2-3 years. Lifespan of 15-20 years with proper care.
-
Vinyl Fence
Low-maintenance alternative to wood. UV-resistant and won't rot, warp, or fade. Available in various styles including privacy, semi-privacy, and picket. Initial cost is higher but minimal maintenance required. Typical lifespan of 20-30 years.
-
Chain Link
Economical and durable option. Galvanized or vinyl-coated steel construction. Heights from 3-12 feet. Perfect for security and pet containment. Minimal maintenance required. Can last 15-20 years.
-
Aluminum Fence
Elegant appearance with minimal maintenance. Powder-coated finish prevents rust. Ideal for slopes and uneven terrain. Available in various styles and heights. Lifetime warranty often available. Can last 20-30+ years.
Post Installation Guide
Post Hole Depth
Dig holes 1/3 of post height plus 6" for gravel. Example: 6' fence needs 30" deep holes. Add 12" in frost-prone areas.
Post Diameter
Hole diameter should be 3x post width. Standard 4x4 post needs 12" diameter hole. Use post hole digger or auger.
Concrete Mix
Use 60-pound bags of concrete mix per post. Add 2-3" gravel base for drainage. Mix concrete to thick soup consistency.
Post Spacing
Maximum 8' between posts for most fences. Reduce to 6' in high-wind areas. Corner posts need extra bracing.
Material Specifications
-
Wood Posts
4x4 pressure-treated for heights up to 6'. Use 6x6 for taller fences or gates. Rated for ground contact. Minimum 40-year warranty recommended.
-
Concrete Requirements
Fast-setting concrete mix preferred. Each post hole needs 1-2 bags (60 lbs each). Add 20% extra for varying soil conditions.
-
Panel Dimensions
Standard panels are 8' wide x 6' high. Custom sizes available. Account for grade changes. Include 1.5" gap at bottom for maintenance.
-
Hardware Specifications
Use hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners. Gate hardware should be rated for weight plus 50%. Include diagonal bracing for gates over 4' wide.
